I’m back

Much time has passed and I have renamed the blog as the old titled seemed a bit… well, naff.

Why ‘Refrigerator Mothers’?

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are people” (British suffragist Rebecca West). Mothers are people, too, but often this is forgotten as they and their actions are evaluated by individuals and society. The term was used in the 1950s to describe the behaviour of mothers of autistic children. The idea that a mother’s lack of warmth could cause autism has been thoroughly debunked now, but the practice of seeking fault in mothers’ behaviour continues.

This blog aims to address questions that remain open: how are mothers evaluated; what avenues are open to mothers in varying circumstances; what is the effect of a mother’s nurture on the nature of her children?
